Monofilament Line Terminators and Tighteners
Metal tie wire can be terminated by twisting it around itself, so it needs no terminators, and since it won't stretch over time it needs no tensioners. But nylon monofilament line needs both terminators and tensioners. So monofilament line should be allowed to run along the top of your deer fence for up to 300 feet or until it comes to the first corner, end, or gate. At that point terminate this run and start another. Doing this in your head, figure out how many "runs" of line you will have and get two terminator fittings for each run.
We offer two kinds of terminator fittings: gripples and U-bolt cable clamps. Regardless of the type you use, start a run by going to one of the posts that will anchor the run. Take the cut end of the monofilament line, put it through your gripple or U-bolt clamp, run it around the post, bring it back through the gripple or clamp in the other direction, and tighten the clamp or gripple. Then go to the post at the other end of the run and repeat the process. Tighten the line with a gripple and the gripple tool or pull the line tight manually before you tighten the U-bolt. Place the line up where it will be fastened to the fencing and do some final tightening--either with the gripple tool or by placing a daisy wheel in the middle of the run and tightening it with the daisy wheel handle tool.
U-bolt cable clamps require no special tools, and the daisy wheel tensioners used with them require only the relatively inexpensive daisy wheel handle tool. So if you have a small number of runs it makes sense to use U-bolts. Besides two U-bolts for each run of line, get one circular wire tensioner for each run and a single handle tool to tighten the daisy wheels to a point where the line will not sag after being fastened to the fencing.
Gripples are the most elegant terminator-tensioners. They must be tightened with a gripple tensioning tool, but they need no circular wire tensioners. So if you have a lot of runs of line (say 10 or more) it makes sense to use gripples. Gripples suitable for 12.5 gauge wire (items 16-05, 16-05A, and 16-05B) also provide an excellent way of terminating and tightening the heavy wires used to attach earth anchors to posts.
