Installation of High-tensile Fixed Knot Deer Fencing

Roll of fixed knot fencing

Introduction to High-Tensile Deer Fence

Fixed knot metal fences were originally designed for high-tensile installation, and they look best and work best that way. However, because of the tension you need really strong anchor points (braces) that will not be pulled out of the ground by the sideways stress. These braces, whether made of wood or metal, are expensive; and one or more are needed every time the fence comes to a grade change, corner, end, or gate. Also, high-tensile fencing needs heavy metal or wooden line posts able to deal with the tension on the fence; these are more costly in terms of money, time, and labor than the posts used for other kinds of deer fence, and they add significantly to the overall budget. The result is that high-tensile metal deer fence, even if you are only installing the affordable 14-gauge 7.5-foot x 330 foot rolls, is at least as expensive as metal hexagrid deer fence.

Posts for a High-Tensile Deer Fence

We offer both metal and wooden posts for high-tensile fences. The metal posts are 11-foot schedule 40 (thick-walled) round steel posts with Class III galvanization inside and out. They come in bundles of 5, with 4 being 1-5/8 inches in diameter and the fifth being a "line boss" 2-3/8 inches in diameter that is usually set in the middle of the other four but that can also be used at dips and ridges. These posts, which should be spaced 20 feet apart, are not suitable for 10-foot high-tensile fences, but they work well with 8 and 7.5-foot high-tensile fences.

Our wooden posts are pressure-treated tapered 5 to 6 inch round posts 12 and 14 feet long (10-footers are also available). Use the 12-footers for a 7.5 or 8-foot deer fence, reserving the 14-footers for a 10-foot fence. These massive posts, weighing 120 to 140 pounds each, are expensive to ship and can be a challenge to install. They or shorter variants are used all over cattle country for containing cattle. They are excellent for containing cattle, but we suspect that they provide a certain amount of overkill when it comes to containing or excluding deer.
