Step 3: Post Accessories

1) If you are getting round posts, get 1 brace band for each round post, noting that these brace bands come in bundles of 8 (item 15-12).

2) Consider getting a digging bar, very handy for setting drive sleeves in straight if your soil is at all rocky. (We offer a digging bar less expensive and better suited to your purpose than those you will find available locally, item 15-03PB.)

3) If you are using round posts with drive sleeves, get one drive cap (item 15-03C). If you are using angle-iron posts or round posts without sleeves, get a manual post driver (item 15-05).

Step 4: Anchors

1) Use earth anchors to counter sideways stress caused by falling branches, snow loads, deer impacts, and the weight of the fence. If you figure these things will not be a problem, especially if you live in the South or West or your deer fence is short (say 160 feet long or less) you may decide to forego these items. Otherwise, plan on using two earth anchors at each corner, one at each end (if your deer fence butts up against another fence, a wall, or a building), and two at each gate (see diagrams below).

2) At the corners, if you wish to keep the earth anchor cables within your fence line, attach the anchors to your corner approach posts instead of to the corner posts and screw them in right along the fence line, as shown in the diagrams below. This will leave the sections between the corner and corner approach posts without anchored support, but this should be of no consequence, especially if the distance between the corner approach posts and the corner post is short.
