Monofilament Line and Metal Tie Wire Use thick nylon monofilament lines or metal tie wires to support your fence from the top. For details see Monofilament Lines and Tie Wire for Deer Fence
Monofilament Line Terminators and Tighteners Metal tie wire can be terminated by twisting it around itself, so it needs no terminators; but nylon monofilament line needs terminators. For details on when to use tie wire and when to use monofilament line see Monofilament Line and Tie Wire for Deer Fence in our installation section. Monofilament line should be allowed to run along the top of your fence for up to 300 feet or until it comes to the first corner, end, or gate. At that point terminate this run and start another. Doing this in your head, figure out how many “runs” of line you will have and get two terminator fittings for each run. We offer three kinds of terminator fittings: gripples, oval metal sleeves, and U-bolt cable clamps. Regardless of the type you use, start a run by going to one of the posts that will anchor the run. Take the cut end of the monofilament line, put it through your gripple, sleeve, or clamp, run it around the post, bring it back through the gripple, sleeve, or clamp in the other direction, and crimp the sleeve or tighten the clamp (gripples need no tightening at this point). Then go to the post at the other end of the run and repeat the process, tightening the run of line manually before you crimp the sleeve or tighten the u-bolt, and placing the line up where it will be fastened to the fencing. U-bolt cable clamps (items 16-08 and 16-081) require no special tools; so if you have a small number of runs it makes sense to use them. Also get 1 circular wire tensioner (item 16-09) for each run of line and 1 tensioning tool (item 16-10) to use in tightening the circular wire tensioners to a point where the line will not sag after being attached to the fencing. Oval metal sleeves (items 16-07 and 16-071) must be applied with a crimping tool (item 16-06). Get 2 oval metal sleeves for each "run" of line, and also get 1 circular wire tensioner (item 16-09) for each run and a single tensioning tool (item 16-10) to use for tightening the circular wire tensioners so that the line will not sag after being attached to the fencing. Gripples (items 16-03, 16-03A, 16-05, 16-05A, and 16-05B) must be tightened with a gripple tensioning tool (item 16-04), but they need no circular wire tensioners. So if you have a lot of runs of line (say 10 or more) it makes sense to use gripples. Gripples suitable for 12.5 gauge wire (items 16-05, 16-05A, and 16-05B) also provide an elegant way of terminating and tightening the heavy wires used to attach earth anchors to posts (see Earth Anchors in the last table below).
