How to Choose a Kit: Kit Length, Metal Hexagrid or Polypropylene, Kinds of Poly Kits

Kit Length

Our kits come in the lengths in which fence rolls are made. So we offer 100, 200, and 300-foot metal hexagrid kits and 100, 165, and 330-foot polypropylene kits. The poly fences with rodent barriers are an exception, because the rodent barrier comes in 100 and 150-foot lengths, and hence we offer 100, 150, and 300-foot kits.

So measure the perimeter of your garden or other space to be protected and choose the length you need. Keep in mind that any given roll can vary in length by up to 5% (it generally doesn’t but it can), and also that you will lose a little length at corners and grade changes when you cut and overlap the fencing. If you find that you really want an awkward length, such as 170 feet of poly fence, contact us for a custom quote and we’ll be glad to provide it.

Choosing Your Fencing Material

Get a metal hexagrid kit if you face heavy deer pressure – because the deer are already well-accustomed to browsing your garden, or you see five or more in a group, or you’re protecting something aromatic like apples or grapes that deer love. Also get a metal hexagrid kit if you simply want the best – something with low visibility that will look good, work well, need little maintenance, and last twice as long as poly. Keep in mind that metal hexagrid kits only come in the 7-foot height and cost more (about $5.50 per foot as compared to $2.00 to $5.00 per foot for poly kits).

Get a polypropylene kit if you find the metal hexagrid kits pricey, if the deer pressure is light, if you want a seasonally removable fence, or if you want a tall (7.5 or 8-foot) fence.

Choosing A Poly Kit

We offer regular poly kits, poly kits with rodent barriers, poly kits that are seasonally removable, and poly kits that are 7.5 or 8 feet tall. If you have no special needs and simply want to save money, get a basic poly kit with angle-iron posts. These posts need a little maintenance (spray any rust spots once a year) but only a little, and their farm/ranch look goes well with most vegetable gardens. If you want something that looks more residential, get one of our regular poly kits with round black metal posts.

If you have rabbits or woodchucks (also called ground hogs) in the area being protected, get a poly kit with a rodent barrier. Or else, to save money, get a regular poly kit and patch up the rabbit/woodchuck holes before the deer find them. If this gets to be a major nuisance you can always get the rodent barrier separately and install it later.

If you figure the rabbit/woodchuck problem is manageable and want to take down your fence in the off-season, get one of our seasonally removable kits. These are more expensive because they feature round posts with drive sleeves. So if you really want to save money, get a regular poly kit with angle-iron posts, buy a weed barrier as an accessory, pull or dig up the posts in the off-season (a little more work but perfectly doable), and pound them in again in the spring.

Finally, if you really want a taller fence, get one of our poly fences with rodent barriers that come in 7.5 and 8-foot heights. You will pay something extra for the rodent barrier, but the added height comes at very little added cost.
